ShambaJijini Summit
16th to 31st of October 2021
Milena Weichelt & Evans Ngure
"I am a creator because I give life to things that would otherwise end in the dump"
Evans Maina Ngure is a creator and sculptor living and working in Nairobi, Kenya. He uses an assortment of discarded material and found objects for animal collages, sculptures, jewelry, light pieces and most recently installations. Through his work, Evans aims to inspire a generation to see waste not as nothing, but something they can build a future from. In addition, Evans' work aims to celebrate animals as important players in our ecosystem's wellbeing.
"You can reuse what you have, you don't have to throw it out."
Milena is a painter. Initially, she had trained as a Silversmith, but a chance meeting brought her to painting, where she combines acrylics with silver and mixed media. Through her art, she documents wildlife and its beauty, which is crucial to preserve.
In the summit, Milena and Evans Ngure talk about their work as professional artists. They share their thoughts on the role of art and artists in the world today, and the relationship with climate change. Both have unique art styles, but they all have the underlying principle of recycling and reduction of waste in the environment. We call it regenerative art!
