"The legacy of Joannah as a fighter will remain if we can conserve Kiambu Forest."

Joannah Stutchbury was a third-generation Kenyan with British ancestry. She was a Camp Manager at Elephants and Bees Research Center, and a Permaculture Trainer and Demonstration School Garden supervisor.

Joannah was an environmentalist and activist who had been campaigning to stop commercial developers from destroying land in the Kiambu forest, which sits at her back door. Because of her conservation efforts, Joannah had been threatened at gunpoint by a developer at the beginning of the year 2021. She was assassinated in front of her house on the 15th of July, 2021.

In the interview, two of Joannah's friends and co-activists, Rose Lukalo, journalist, and Fui Thuo, Founder of Green Walk, share her memories of Joannah. They speak about her vision and commitment, her bravery and her love for nature.

Joannah’s assassination is a very sad state of affairs. The government ought to protect such people who are actively protecting the environment. They are heroes!

Joannah RIP. You are my hero for conserving the environment that I live in. Even though you were murdered, those who did it still know that nature is unforgiving. If they go-ahead to destroy the area, nature will destroy them too through the effects of global warming.

Had great pleasure visiting Joannah’s garden, rich in diversity just as nature teaches us!

Nice story about the late Madam Joan. Inspirational.

  • Thank you for sharing Joannah’s story and honoring Jo as a Mashujaa. It was a horrific tragedy and it is a huge loss to the permaculture and environmental community. She is etched in our memory as a true earth warrior and will be remembered for her courageous work and indeed her bravery.

    Rest well, Jo.
